Using a different strong password for every important account is difficult to manage manually. A password manager can create, store and fill unique passwords, reducing the temptation to reuse one password across many services.

A password manager stores login details in an encrypted vault and helps you generate strong passwords. Some tools also support passkeys, secure notes and alerts about reused or exposed passwords. Features differ, so review the provider’s documentation before choosing.

Create one strong master password

The master password protects the vault. Make it long, unique and memorable. Do not reuse it anywhere else. If the service supports an additional security key or authentication method, consider enabling it and keeping recovery information in a safe place.

Start with important accounts

Move your email, banking, shopping and social accounts first. Email deserves special attention because it may be used to reset other passwords. Change reused passwords and save the new credentials directly in the manager.

Use autofill carefully

Autofill is convenient, but check the website address before submitting credentials. Be careful with lookalike domains and unexpected login windows. A password manager may not fill on a different domain, which can be a useful warning sign.

Plan for recovery

Understand how to regain access if you lose your phone or forget the master password. Store recovery codes securely and never send them to another person. A recovery plan should not expose the vault to someone who only claims to be support staff.
